SOSUA REVIEW A TRIP REPORT BY A GOOD FRIEND

This wasnt my first Dominican Republic vacation. Previously, I had stayed at an all inclusive resort in Punta Cana. But Punta Cana deals are becoming more and more scarce, and the days of cheap rent are over. I kissed my savings account goodbye long ago, so this time I was definitely on a budget. Therefore, on the advice of a well-traveled friend, I decided to go to Sosua Beach and stay at a Local Favorite. I was promised an affordable stay, beautiful, clean beaches within walking distance, and a taste of how the locals lived.

My days were spent lounging on the beach munching on coconut candies and peanut brittle sold by little Hatian boys, or walking around town soaking up local culture under sunny, cloudless skies and meeting many friendly people eager to talk and walk with me or drive me on the back of their motorbikes. Motorcylces or mopeds seemed to be the preferred mode of travel and I quickly got used to the sound of them whizzing by as I walked through the streets. It even became a common sight to see Dominican Women riding on motorcycles holding their groceries and a baby.

After a few nights at my Hotel I decided it was not the place for me due to the noise level at night, so the owner took me to his Trade Winds Condos not too far from the Bar, but much quieter. Here I had a one bedroom condo, complete with a kitchen, breakfast table, and a terrace overlooking the pool. all for $50/a night US.

I had a variety of food during my one week stay there: Dominican at Bailey's, German at a place called Orchidee, Mexican at Morai Mau, a classy restaurant that had a fabulous ambiance with candles on every table, a warm beach breeze, and even an acoustic guitar player singing melodic Spanish tunes.

Although the beach and the food were the highlights of the trip (I've managed to turn laying around and eating into an art form) there were some other attractions that I got my lazy tuches up for. There were some great deals on Sosua beach which had a long jungle-like path cluttered with restaurants and street vendors selling the usual Caribbean gift type stuff with some Dominican stuff mixed in. I also visited The Jewish Musuem depicting the Holocaust and the refugees that sought freedom in The Dominican Republic during World War II. In the end, I never made it to Cabarete, famous for its wind surfing and night life, which attracts tourists from all over the world. But I didnt care. I had a good time and met many nice people including a gentleman named Kevin who worked at one of the Local internet centers and gave me a lot of advice about where to go and what to eat. Thanks to him I had a great trip and I recommend it to anyone looking for travel deals in the dominican republic.

A new project is underway in Sosua. I Spoke to one of the owners who was on site managing the project and he agreed to a few pictures and a shor video clip. They are putting in a multi-story structure and plan to have rooms available. Stay tuned for future posts with the latest information. The Latest on poor Perlita

The good news is that Perla is now putting pressure on the bad leg. She doesn't seem to be in pain nor does she have much dexterity, but it has to be a good sign. A few of the Rocky's Regulars have been giving Perla daily massages to the affected paw, and would like to think, i'm sure, that the work has been paying off. Only time will tell.

This guy is not just a familiar face around town here in Sosua, he is also a published author with a new book on the way. It's called Apocalyptic Ring Tones and you can read more about its release here. He was in Rocky's this morning working on some of his publishing details, and doing some fine tuning on his website. He's a real character and has alot of great stories about the Dominican Republic and what it was like more than 20 years ago.

An Early Morning in Sosua

For whatever reason , this morning , i woke up early and couldn't get back to sleep. As usual that meant an early walk to the main road in the dark and probably a taxi or gua gua , instead of the normal moto concho. The conchos dont really get going until around 7:00 am . I got into town around 6:00 am which meant an extended sit at Cafe' Girasol and more time to ponder life in Sosua. I was greeted by the normal early morning crew: the local Wachimen finishing up there night shift, some of the local working girls catching the public cars back to their respective Pueblos and the local Hustlers (called tigueres here ) grabbing a coffee and heading home as well. I love the mornings here for a couple of reasons...1) there is far less "buya" or noise polution and there fore things seem a little more peaceful and calm. and 2) You can see the "big picture" and witness the local eb and flow in Sosua and realize that underneath it all there is a community of people just trying to live normal lives like everywhere else in the world. This seems a little harder to witness at 11:00pm for some reason. Things seem a little more comercial. that's all for now, as i have to get to work, but i will be uploading some random pics later in the day.

The people of Catalonia have autonomy in Spain. This means they have their own local government, their own police and some control over their own community. In September 2005, the Catalan Parliament decided to call Catalonia a 'nation' according to Spanish Constitution which says that Spain is a group of nationalities. But this term has no judicial valor and it's only a term to calm down a minority of separatists. Catalonia is richer than many other Spanish regions, because industrialization began there earlier than in other Spanish areas. However, this relative richness is used by the Spanish state to subsidize other Spanish areas. There are a lot of factories and businesses in the cities. The region is also greener than southern Spain, and crops are grown here. The north of Catalonia is less hot than the rest of Spain, and has more hills and trees. In the north of the region is the border with France.

As i wandered towards the Main Road this morning, i couldn't help but notice the lack of clouds and the imressive anount of sunshine. It has been the exception more than the rule this high season , although , knock on wood, we seem to be "out of the woods in terms of the rainy cloudy wet stuff. As i am still waking up this morning, and am still trying to decide the theme and purpose of this daily Blog i don't have much to say other than it is a beautiful day here in Sosua and i am thankful for everything i have. On a positive note , Perla , one of the House Dogs here at Rockys escaped last night with her accomplis Bruno(no doubt the motivating force). The Good news is she is showing signs of recovery from a previos injury to her front leg. Up until today i hadn't seen her put pressure on it but as she scrambled in , shamelessly this morning after her nocturnal adventures, i noticed that she was running on all fours. Although she was limping quite a bit this seems like a positive sign. As is normally the case after an " AWOL alnighter " The Dogs are crashed in the sun , rejuevenating themselves for there next adventure. I'll try to snap o couple of picture in order to develop a habit of 1 post a day with pictures and video. Kev Out
